Urban
development
The
study of the city located between the Huaca del Sol and the Huaca
de la Luna began in 1995, to achieve a better understanding of the
social and political situation that fostered the construction of
such grand temples, evidence of a very powerful society.
The remains of the aforementioned city currently
occupy some 500 square meters, and although they can’t
be seen on the surface, the archaeological diggings undertaken
there during recent seasons
have provided interesting information about the social and economical
structure of the Moche, and the level of urban and state development
they reached.
Based
on the study of ceramic, metal and other remains used in ceremonies,
found in craftsmen workshops still preserved in the city, researchers
affirm that it was inhabited by people from the Mochica elite,
responsible for the services provided by both temples, commonly
called huacas.
