Not
long ago ethno-history was the only source of
information about the behavior, rituals, religious
and cosmic visions of the ancient Andean people.
However, the archaeological findings of elite
tombs during recent years in the northern coast
of Perú have set new approaches on the
subject.
Current research indicates that the idiosyncrasy of Mochica society was based
on rituals that fulfilled religious, political, administrative and economical
roles. These rituals were performed according to a ceremonial calendar.
It
is believed that Ai Apaec, or the Deity of the
Mountain, was the main Mochica deity, which had
various representations, according to the role
he was assigned in each time or era.
However, the ancient Mochica also worshipped other
deities, which were ascribed with the power to
dominate the forces of nature.
